Tree removal in Windsor, Maine

Most people know Windsor for the fairgrounds on Ridge Road — the Windsor Fair has run since 1888, late August through Labor Day — but the town itself is roughly three-quarters woodland, and that is really what we are called out here for: hazard pines over farmhouses, field-edge hardwoods with one-sided crowns that lean the way they grew, and roadside trees on long rural stretches that will eventually find a power line.

There is more water here than people expect. Threemile Pond, which Windsor shares with China and Vassalboro, runs to over 1,100 acres; Savade Pond is Windsor’s own; and the West Branch of the Sheepscot runs the entire length of the town on its way south. Great ponds carry the full shoreland rules — a 100-foot vegetation buffer, cutting scored against a points system instead of a crew’s judgment, canopy openings capped at 250 square feet, and stumps left in the ground — and the town’s Code Enforcement Officer administers the ordinance. A genuine hazard tree can generally still come out after consulting them, sometimes on the strength of an arborist’s written evaluation, which we can provide.

On open ground a tree can sometimes simply be felled, and we will say so rather than sell you a rigging job you do not need. Around a house it is almost never true: a climber sets a rope and takes the tree down in pieces, or the crane lifts the wood out over the roofline.

Windsor is in Kennebec County, so it is inside the state quarantine for both emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid — ash logs and hardwood firewood cannot be moved out of the area, and a borer-killed ash gets brittle fast. And for browntail moth, whose hairs cause a poison-ivy-like rash, the Maine Forest Service asks that winter webs be clipped between October and March, while the trees are dormant, and that anything high or near a line be left to a licensed arborist.
